Adventure playgrounds get the go-ahead

The decision to transform Watford Borough Council’s play services was upheld at a meeting of the Council’s scrutiny committee yesterday. This means a £1.25m investment in state-of-the-art play equipment at Harebreaks and Harwoods adventure playgrounds will get underway in autumn with the new facilities opening to local young people next spring.

The upgrade to both sites will ensure that local young people will be able to enjoy a thrilling range of brand new play equipment, designed specifically for five to 15-year-olds. Another huge benefit is that the playgrounds will be open to young people and their families all day, every day.

Councillor Karen Collett, Portfolio Holder for Community who attended the meeting, said:

“We understand that the decision to transform our play offer has disappointed the young people who use the current, supervised service but we are confident that when the revamped playgrounds open they will really enjoy the challenge and excitement of the new equipment.  And it is important to remember we are running a programme of activities in the Easter and summer holidays so there will still be a varied mix of play opportunities to choose from.

“These are difficult financial times for councils and we are having to make difficult decisions about our services.  What we have done through this investment is secured the future of adventurous play in the town at both sites.”

Highlights in the new playgrounds will include a double zip wire, iconic tower with aerial tunnels, slide and bridge and a climbing wall at Harwoods and an adventure trail and landmark climbing equipment at Harebreaks. Both sites are designed to ensure they are in keeping with the local area, which is particularly important at Harebreaks where the proposals ensure the new equipment blends into the woodland environment.
