Marilyn's local community involvement in Watford started when she became a Samaritan’s volunteer at the St John’s Road branch 20 years ago.
Her involvement with the council, and where she first met the Lib Dem team was when she helped form a local Residents Association for residents around Estcourt and Southeron Road about 10 years ago, for which she was Vice Chair. The group was formed to oppose several planning applications, and the Lib Dem team stepped up to help and assist. Marilyn's role was to co-Chair the meetings, and be the liaison between the residents, elected members, and council.
She worked in Central and Local Government for 9 years, often designing programs in how to better engage with both residents and elected members. She is currently a voluntary member of the WACA (Watford African Caribbean Association) community events planning team, and a founding member of the Watford Wellness volunteer group which is run in association with Watford Chamber of Commerce and the Watford Borough Council Mental Health Champion, Councillor Rabi Martins. Watford Wellness provides free mental health events every month for businesses and residents.
The Lib Dem values that mean the most to Marilyn are...
As someone who has been working in the field of training both individuals and organisations in the areas of inclusion, equality, diversity, and creativity for the past 18 years, Marilyn was particularly drawn to the national stance on championing freedom, dignity, rejecting prejudice and discrimination, promoting a more open government, and working with a sense of community and partnership.
On a local level, the Lib Dem team and council members are hard working, care about the community, and have the best interests of both residents and local businesses at heart, and the values they display resonated with Marilyn. Having lived through and worked through many of these issues herself, she is passionate about creating environments and spaces where others no longer have to.
Marilyn enjoys living in Watford because...
Marilyn has lived in various wards in Watford, having moved to Watford after graduating University; her first job was on the Watford Business Park. She often describes Watford as the centre of the universe given how interconnected Watford is in terms transportation routes; those who have had late night’s in London know the final trains and busses out of Euston all lead to Watford. Watford has a wide variety of shops, amenities and services, and the events which take place throughout the year (when not in lockdown) are amazing, everything from Imagine Watford, the kids sports day, Watford Beach, the Big Screen, through to the British Fire Fighter’s Challenge, Big Skate, and the life size Christmas decorations. There is always something fun going on, and two of her favourite places to unwind and relax are the duck pond and flowers in the centre of town, and the wonderful Cassiobury Park. She truly loves living in Watford and being so central is a gift.
For a bit of fun, when asked about her favourite food Marilyn said...
My favourite takeaway is Chinese from Rice Bowl in St Albans Road, and Marks and Spencer also do a pretty good version of my favourites! I also love anything from the Roti Pan Kitchen, and Jumping Jack in the street food market. To say I love food would be an understatement, so I would need a whole menu to list them all! And desserts, don’t get me started... My love of food and trying new things is also why The Global Buffet is Watford is a firm favourite with myself and the workshop attendees I bring to Watford.
