Hunton Bridge telephone box becomes library

Early this year Cllr Chris Whately-Smith put Abbots Langley Parish Council in touch with Three Rivers District Council, enabling them to get a grant towards repainting this heritage telephone box in Hunton Bridge.

“I have been asking Parish to bring forward painting it as it was beginning to look rather weather-beaten” said Chris.

“This led me to thinking what use it could be put to. I had thought about a library of some sort and asked for ideas from the community. The replies I got were for just this, so I asked permission from the Parish, had an old bookcase donated  and set up this self-perpetuating library. It has a map of the area, a small roll of remembrance for those fallen in the first world war, some history of Hunton bridge and the conservation area. Most importantly it has a selection of books for all ages which have been donated and added to. The idea being that you just bring in one you have read  and take another. It’s great to see it in use and being kept tidy”.
