Liberal Democrat run Watford Borough Council has declared a Climate Emergency at a meeting of its Full Council tonight. Scientist and Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate Cllr Ian Stotesbury presented the motion which was agreed unanimously.
The motion committed the council to helping to make Watford by 2030 and coming with an action plan to help make the town more sustainable. This is in addition to projects to reduce air pollution, create a new On Demand Bus Service and bike hire scheme as well as new solar panel installation programmes.
Proposer of the motion Liberal Democrat Cllr Ian Stotesbury said, ‘We must continue to be bold and truly lead on this crucial issue. By doing so we can help our residents reduce their bills, help clean our air, and improve access healthier modes of transport. We can support local ecology, biodiverity and bring natural beauty to new areas. I’m really proud that we have been able to declare a Climate Emergency. It’s important we act now, before it is too late.’
Liberal Democrat Elected Mayor of Watford Peter Taylor said, ‘This is such an important issue and so I’m pleased that we have been able to declare this emergency. We’ve already started work on making Watford a greener town. That includes introducing new sustainable transport, such as my new bike share scheme and on demand bus service. However, I’m hoping this can bring us all together, focus us and make sure Watford is carbon neutral by 2030 for future generations of people living in our town.’
