Watford General Hospital and our NHS are at breaking point and the Conservative government is simply not investing enough. Only the Liberal Democrats have a plan to save our NHS, with 1 penny on income tax rates to raise an additional £6 billion for health and social care.
Across England today, patients are lying on trolleys in hospital corridors, urgent operations are being cancelled, and the elderly are being denied the care they need.
Our NHS – once the envy of the world – is in crisis.
But it doesn’t have to be this way. We can change the direction of our country – and save our NHS.
Today, we’ve revealed our plan do that.
We will invest an extra £6bn a year in our NHS and social care system; paid for through an immediate 1p rise in all rates of income tax.
This funding will be ring-fenced to be spent only on the NHS and social care and will provide vital services with the money they desperately need.
But we also know that providing more money is not enough – that’s why our extra funding is part of a five-point recovery plan to put health and care services on a more sustainable footing long term.
You can read the plan in full here:
Every year, more and more people need health and social care – which means the system is at breaking point.
The alternative to raising taxes is cutting drastically from other essential public services, like schools and welfare, as the Conservatives have done, to disastrous effect.
It has to stop.
That’s why we are going to be honest with people – and say that to secure the future of Watford General Hospital and our NHS, we will all need to chip in a little more.
And we’re the only party that will do that.
The Conservatives will continue to savage public services with cuts, and Labour are too weak and divided to offer any solutions.
Together – we can change Britain’s future and build health and care service fit for the modern world and a legacy that we can proudly pass on to future generations.
