The Watford Observer has reported that only 8 charges have been brought against suspects despite 294 burglaries in Watford.

Responding to this news, Liberal Democrat Mayor of Watford Peter Taylor said:

“The Police and Crime Commissioner for Hertfordshire must hire more officers to tackle crime effectively in Watford.

“In April he put up his share of council tax by almost 5% but we actually have fewer officers now than a year ago. I have been calling for more police in the High Street to prevent crime and anti-social behaviour in the town centre but we also need more police officers in general.

“The number of police officers leaving the force in Hertfordshire is increasing. The number of new officers recruited is below target. The government’s own figures show that not a single officer has been hired using the money from the big increase in council tax bills introduced by the Conservative Police and Crime Commissioner this year. We deserve better than this.”
