Lib Dems scrap Conservative plans to slash recycling access at Waterdale Centre

29 Jun 2025

The Lib Dem-run Hertfordshire County Council has scrapped Conservative plans to reduce opening at Waterdale Recycling Centre in Garston from seven to five days a week and force users to book appointments before using the facility.

This is one of the first major decisions since the Liberal Democrats became the largest group at County Hall after the local elections in May 2025. Back in February, the Conservative leadership decided to slash access to Waterdale, reducing opening times from seven to five days a week as well as making users book in advance.

These plans were widely unpopular, with many residents signing a Watford Lib Dem petition urging Hertfordshire County Council to drop them.

Liberal Democrat county councillor Tim Williams said: ‘This is a well-used facility that benefits our environment by enabling residents to recycle household items. I am pleased we have been able to reverse the Conservatives’ ill-thought-out plans.’
