Mayor of Watford writes to schools on uniform costs

Elected Mayor of Watford, Peter Taylor, has written to headteachers of schools in and around Watford to encourage them to take measures to reduce school uniform costs.

New rules coming into force in September will limit the number of branded items of uniform to three plus a tie in secondary schools.

However, research conducted by the Mayor’s Office found that the cost of a basic uniform – one shirt, one jumper, a blazer, a tie, and one skirt or pair of trousers – can range from £54.60 to £120.09 in Watford’s schools.

These costs don’t include PE kits or other school essentials, like backpacks, pencil cases, and water bottles.

Peter Taylor said:

“I used to be a teacher and know that school uniforms can help create a sense of belonging and reduce bullying. However, it’s really important that schools try to reduce costs on families.

“New national rules limit the number of branded items to three, plus a tie at secondary level. I know that local schools work hard to help families who are struggling financially. They should do everything they can to keep the cost of school uniforms as low as possible. Offering the option of adding iron- or sew-on logos to generic items rather than requiring the purchase of branded items is just one way of helping families.

“I’m so proud of our schools in Watford and the hard work of all teachers and staff who help our children prepare for their futures. But in this cost-of-living crisis, we need to think harder than ever about how we can support families.”
