Mayor writes to new Prime Minister with three priorities for Watford

Watford’s Elected Mayor, Peter Taylor, has written to newly appointed Prime Minister Andy Burnham to congratulate him on taking office and to urge his new government to deliver on three key priorities for the town.

In his letter, the Mayor welcomed the Prime Minister’s commitment to focus on “problem solving, rather than point scoring”, and set out three practical ways the Government could make a real difference for Watford residents and businesses.

The first priority is to accelerate the rebuilding of Watford General Hospital. While construction is not currently expected to begin until 2032, the Mayor argues that years of preparation have already taken place, with land made available, planning permission granted and access to the site improved. He is calling on the Government to provide the funding needed to bring the project forward.

The second request is for all of Watford’s railway stations to be rezoned into London fare Zone 6. The Mayor says this would significantly reduce commuting costs for local residents and businesses, helping to ease the cost of living and making Watford a more attractive place to work and invest.

Finally, the Mayor is calling on the Government to support businesses by reducing costs and making it easier to trade with European neighbours, helping to strengthen the local economy and create jobs.

The letter concludes by inviting the Prime Minister to visit Watford to see the town firsthand, highlighting its thriving High Street, Green Flag parks and strong community.

Peter Taylor said he looks forward to working constructively with the new Government to deliver positive outcomes for Watford and its residents.
