Temporary replacement footbridge for Oxhey Grange to be installed within weeks
Network Rail confirms plans to restore pedestrian access over the railway following removal of unsafe bridge
Residents affected by the closure of Oxhey Grange Footbridge could see a return to a more direct route as early as the end of November, after Network Rail confirmed plans to install a temporary replacement.
The original footbridge was removed last month after being deemed unstable, leaving local residents facing longer journeys via alternative routes.
Network Rail has now confirmed that a temporary footbridge will be installed in late November or early December, restoring pedestrian access across the railway while plans for a permanent replacement are developed.
Watford’s Elected Mayor, Peter Taylor, welcomed the announcement, saying it followed calls from local representatives and residents to restore the crossing.
He said: “I am glad that Network Rail has listened to us and to residents and has decided to restore access over the railway while a more permanent replacement can be designed.
“This is an important route for many local residents, and it is good that a temporary bridge is being installed in the next few weeks.”
Three Rivers District Council Leader, Councillor Stephen Giles-Medhurst, also welcomed the news, highlighting the impact the closure has had on people living in the area.
He said: “This is great news for local residents who have faced far longer journeys via the alternative route.
“We will work with Network Rail to ensure that the Ancient Woodland at Sherwoods Wood is protected.”
Alongside the temporary installation, work is continuing on the design and planning of a permanent replacement footbridge.
Network Rail has also said it will hold a community engagement event, giving residents an opportunity to hear more about the proposals and the next steps for restoring the crossing.
